Meet the Teams

Give a shout out about your Neuro Team

Welcome to the Neurosurgical Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham – a leading centre of excellence in neurosurgical care and a proud member of the NTNG.

As a designated Major Trauma Centre, we deliver high-quality, round-the-clock care through our five dedicated theatres – four elective and one emergency theatre operating 24/7. Our team of over 22 highly skilled surgical consultants performs a wide range of complex cranial and spinal procedures, as well as shorter surgeries and day cases, ensuring comprehensive care for our patients.

Our theatre team is made up of approximately 50 dedicated nursing staff, ranging from Band 2 to Band 7, all united by a shared commitment to achieving gold-standard patient care. Although we do not provide paediatric services on site, we work closely with our colleagues at Birmingham Children's Hospital to ensure seamless support and shared expertise.

We take immense pride in the work we do and are honoured to showcase our department and the inspiring stories of our patients and teams on Channel 5’s acclaimed prime time series “Surgeons: A Matter of Life and Death.”

We actively welcome visits from other centres and are excited to expand the reach of the Neuro Theatre Network Group – fostering collaboration, innovation, and excellence in neurosurgical care across the UK and beyond.

Hello from the Neurosurgery at Sheffield Childrens NHS Foundation Trust!

We are one of only three dedicated children’s hospital trusts in the UK and provides integrated healthcare for children and young people.

Our Neurosurgery provision is small, but mighty! We do both cranial and spinal work, and using our IOMRI we do tumour resections for children and young people in our region.

We have one Neuro Theatre which runs on average 2 days a week for elective and semi elective work. We are also a major trauma centre, and our emergency team works 24/7, 365 days of the year.

We look forward to linking up with other centres across the UK, sharing ideas and innovation to keep improving our service and professional practice.

Hello Neurosurgery Team at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust!

Thank you for the introduction—what an inspiring snapshot of the vital work you’re doing. It’s fantastic to hear about your integrated approach, the specialized use of intraoperative MRI (IOMRI), and your commitment to both elective and emergency care, all within a focused paediatric setting.

Your "small but mighty" team clearly plays a crucial role in the region, and your openness to collaboration and innovation is commendable. Connecting with other centres across the UK will no doubt drive even greater advancements in care and outcomes for children and young people.

If there’s anything you'd like support with—feel free to reach out. Looking forward to hearing more about your journey and successes!

Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN) – Operating Theatres
Located within the state-of-the-art neuro and paediatric building at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Opened in 2020 the Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN) Operating Theatres are a centre of neurosurgical excellence and a proud member of the Neuro Theatre Network Group (NTNG).

We offer a comprehensive and specialised surgical environment featuring:

Four dedicated neurosurgical operating theatres

One interventional angiography suite

A 3.0T intraoperative MRI imaging suite

A dedicated neuro Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Our own Day of Surgery Admission Unit (DOSA)

As part of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh’s 28-theatre system and a key facility in Scotland’s major trauma network, the DCN supports complex neurological and neurosurgical procedures with advanced infrastructure and multidisciplinary collaboration.

The wider DCN is a 59-bedded supra-regional unit, providing specialist neurology and neurosurgery services to the East Coast of Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway, and beyond. The unit also includes 10 high dependency beds to support patients requiring advanced monitoring and care.

The neuro-interventional radiology service extends across South East Scotland, the Highlands, the Northern Isles, and Grampian, reinforcing our position as a leading centre for neuroscience in Scotland.

Our theatre team comprises of 12 consultant neurosurgeons, including 4 who cover both paediatric and adult services. We also have 14 dedicated neuro-anaesthetists and 48 peri-operative staff, ranging from Band 3 to Band 7. Notably, there are no Band 2 roles in theatre within NHS Scotland. All registered practitioners working in DCN theatres and recovery are required to be qualified and competent in at least two of the three core theatre disciplines. Additionally, 25% of our staff are proficient across all three areas. We do not have any registered staff who solely scrub, solely assist with anaesthetics, or solely work in recovery. This multidisciplinary competency enables a highly dynamic and collaborative team approach, ensuring we consistently deliver gold-standard care to our patients.
